Damien thinks The Final Countdown is hilarious

Or maybe just my version…

2012

today is my birthday.

And this is how I feel about it:

Yes, spit-up-covered bib and all. Haha.

I’m sure I’ll survive somehow though, especially with that adorable face to look at (and those chubberson cheeks to nom!)

weekly baby update: twenty-one weeks

He’s grabbing my hair here; it’s one of his favorite hobbies. (Also: HOLY CRAP BIG SPARKLY EYES)

Firsts:

Daddy was pushing while I played paparazzi

  • First non-prompted giggle attack (he was laughing at Ripley jumping on and off the couch, which she does a lot. Then we called the big dog, Molly, over to see if she was funny too, and Damien’s verdict was that she was. The cats totally bored him though.)
  • Sitting up for short periods of time (and then toppling over, which he doesn’t seem to mind and is pretty darn cute)

Sitting, with mommy’s hand for support (while the other hand takes the picture – thus, a blurry picture, but I love his hair here!)

Memories:

On Sunday we went to a BBQ party in the park. It was an all-afternoon thing and we arrived at the tail end of it (Dan and I got distracted watching baseball…) but there was still food so that’s what matters, lol. After people started leaving we decided to walk over to the other side of the park and see if Damien wanted a ride on the baby swings. He thought they were pretty cool and I actually took him out before he was ‘done’ (in Damien’s world, ‘doneness’ is indicated by fussing.) (I took him out because two firetrucks, an ambulance, and a helicopter whizzed by and we wanted to see what was going on. We never actually did figure it out…)

More swinging I know, but he’s just too cute here! I can’t believe he’s related to me lol

This week was kind of crazy for me because at work, I had to share my space with auditors working for the school, meaning I had to keep the kids quieter than usual. Well, the kids did great, but Damien kind of fails at quiet lol. As long as he was making happy (albeit loud) baby noises I decided the auditors would be just fine, but I did take him out for awhile if he was crying. We did a lot of walking around the lobby in the stroller (and I discovered he REALLY likes yelling in the lobby, because it echoes!)

Napping at school, wearing his new favorite bib – seriously, he loves this bib. I bought two of them, and have one in the diaper bag as a ‘toy’.

On Thursday, all the kids in school were practicing for the upcoming school musical, so I decided to take off from work early. We worked on Mother’s Day gifts (which I’ll update on later) and decided to go out to dinner, as a kind of combination birthday/Mother’s Day/avoid-the-rush-for-both thing. We went to Black Bear Diner, which is delicious and fun and most importantly kid-friendly. Damien had fun throwing things on the floor and trying to steal French fries off my plate (none of them made it into his mouth, though, which is too bad because that’d be a pretty hilarious first food.) We then went to Target, where Damien napped and Dan and I had a case of the giggles, because occasionally in public we’re five years old.

‘Reading’ at Black Bear – coincidentally, this book features bears!

pity party, table for 1

I am not a happy camper today, and here’s why:

  • Soooo sleep-deprived. Damien decided the “four month wakefuls” are actually the “almost five month wakefuls” and that sleeping for more than 2-3 hours at a time is lame. (Note this is overnight; when he sleeps more than 30 minutes at a time during the day – which is rare – I feel like I’ve won the lottery.) The cumulative effect of not enough sleep for 5+ months doesn’t help, I’m sure (every 9-month pregnant woman knows that sleep doesn’t really happen then either.) I would definitely say sleep deprivation is THE hardest thing about having a baby thus far.
  • One of my goldfish died, and he decided to die inside a fake rock in his tank, so getting his dead body out is going to be FUN. Also, I’m not sure where the net is…
  • I’m behind on everything. Laundry, paperwork, cleaning, car stuff, you name it.
  • My birthday is this week and I’m dreading it because I feel like a total failure in life and I so don’t want to get older to commemorate that. I told Damien I would rather celebrate his birthday twice, lol.
  • The dog needs a bath and is SO SO SMELLY. (See: Behind On Everything.)
  • I hate all my clothes, but have neither money nor inclination to get more (since everything looks bad on me anyway.) (And even if something did look good on me I probably couldn’t breastfeed in it. Buying maternity clothes was easy compared to this.) Also, I really need a haircut but the combination of postpartum-hair-falling-out and stress-hair-pulling -out results in me being too embarrassed to get one. (Also, I think I have PTSD from last time, where I ended up with hardly any hair at all.)
  • Baby is super fussy today and won’t let me put him down. In fact, if I’m not nursing him, patting his butt with one hand and patting his back with the other, he’s crying. Which is why it’s 2pm, I have to leave for work soon, and I’m still not dressed.

Oh look; fussy baby has awakened. Time to go discover all the things he doesn’t want to do!

the carseat chronicles – part 2

I wrote about the beginning of our carseat journey here. I had just bought a convertible carseat, because Damien was rapidly outgrowing his infant carrier/carseat. Well, rather than weigh/measure Damien every other day to make sure he was still fitting in his seat, I decided to just bite the bullet and install the convertible.

Damien last week, when I installed the seat

Damien’s new carseat is the Eddie Bauer XRS 65 Convertible Car Seat, and overall I’m happy with our purchase. It met my basic carseat requirements: rear-facing to 40 lbs, forward-facing to 65 lbs, small enough to fit in the backseats of our cars (we have a Prius and a Civic, although it will mostly live in the Prius) (it’s actually a bit smaller than the infant seat), and under $150 (we paid $130 but I think it was on sale.) As a bonus, it looks really nice in the backseat, more like a car manufacturer designed it than a baby company (which makes sense I guess, since Eddie Bauer isn’t a baby company.)

But my favorite thing about the seat is that it looks sooo much more comfortable for Damien. While he doesn’t LOVE it – it is, after all, a carseat which is located in the car – he tolerates it better than the infant carrier. And just look at him in the above picture – it was definitely time for him to switch seats; he just fits so much better (here he is spilling out of his other seat, lol.)

The carseat isn’t perfect, but none of its quirks are dealbreakers. It’s fairly easy to install; in fact the LATCH system was much easier to get tight than on the base of the infant seat. Adjusting the strap height was much easier than our previous seat as well, and as Damien grows we can raise the head rest in the back (right now it’s at the lowest it can safely be.)

Probably the most annoying thing is adjusting the tightness of the straps – the adjustor is in the front which I’m sure is awesome for forward-facing, but for rear-facing it’s next to impossible. I’ve actually done it but it’s not easy! I made sure that the adjustment strap wasn’t trapped between the carseat and the car seat (and that is why I make carseat a compound word, even though it isn’t! We already have car seats! They are seats in the car!) Our former carseat actually had to be removed from the car to adjust the straps, so I guess this is a step in the right direction, though it’s still not perfect.

The other problem is the level of the seat; it’s hard to get it parallel with the floor, resulting in a slumped-forward baby. The carseat manual actually recommends putting a pool noodle or a rolled-up towel under the front of the seat to help! Well, our seat isn’t perfectly parallel, but Damien isn’t slumped forward so I haven’t worried about it. If we had started him out in this seat as an infant we would have had to go the towel/noodle route.

In conclusion: I like this seat. On a scale of 1-5 I’d give it a 4, because for all the good points there’s still that dang strap adjustment problem. Still, I’ll be happy to use it until Damien grows out of it (…which, with the rate he’s growing, might be sooner than we think. )

weekly baby update: twenty weeks

What, doesn’t everyone nap like this? :)

I know I could say this in every update, but can I take a moment to point out that twenty is a pretty big number? Just wait until he’s twenty months… And if anyone was wondering (she says to her imaginary audience) I’m going to do the weekly thing until at least six months. Maybe to one year if I’m feeling really wordy. I’m in for the long haul with the monthly updates, though (meaning at least a few years. We’ll see.)

Firsts:

You can tell Damien is loving his first baseball game, lol!

  • First week in his ‘new’ carseat (we bought it awhile ago, but just started using it – he seems to like it better than his infant seat, which is to say he doesn’t loathe it with every fiber of his being)

Damien, with Oball, alligator and carseat

  • First social laughter (laughing just because someone else is laughing… I love it!!)
  • First injury from mommy (I pinched his skin in his diaper snap – thanks, GroVias – and instantly felt like the Worst Parent Ever. I think he’s forgiven me, but I have to see the little red mark every time I change his diaper and it makes me feel horrible all over again…)

Memories:

These days Damien is definitely in love with Mommy (and the feeling is mutual!)  He’s always smiling at me across the room, trying to catch my eye while I’m talking, and giggling at the silly things I do (like kiss his tummy and eat his feet.) I know it won’t last forever, but I’m loving it while it does!

Giggling is something Damien does a lot of lately. He’s getting ticklish so a bath or diaper change can start the laughter. Damien still thinks tummy kisses are pretty funny (and takes the opportunity to grab big handfuls of my hair) but laughs at seemingly random things – like Dan picking up his legs and dropping them, or me grabbing his feet and chanting “doo, doo, doo” (what can I say? I’m overtired), or me rocking him and asking him why he isn’t sleepy. My very favorite thing, though, is lifting him over my head and kissing his cheeks while he giggles. It just melts my heart.

BIG eyes in his crib

Damien’s exploration of the world has just exploded. He grabs at/pets/laughs at the dogs and cats, and can figure out virtually all of his toys. It’s so fun to see him purposely reach out and grab a toy and make it rattle/vibrate/sing. I have a little backpack of his favorite toys to take places with us (he likes his Oball, Sophie, this bendy ball, his bunny teether thingy, and various plushie/blanket hybrids.)

I already wrote pretty extensively about the things that happened this week, so I’ll just sum this up with a note to my baby: Damien, you are the most incredible, magical, beautiful thing in my world. I fall more and more in love with you every day, and I can’t wait to find out more about the wonderful little person you are.

Awwwwww…. especially those crooked lips!

Videos:

P.S. Here’s what Baby Boy looked like twenty weeks in. As cute as he was, I think twenty weeks out wins. :) Oh, and here’s twenty weeks worth of baby in my belleh, along with some Half Baked ice cream (because, get it? haha)

fluffmail

A few weeks ago I saw GroVia diapers on sale from BabySteals. I’ve never tried GroVia and am interested in all-in-ones, and the diapers were 60% off, so I went for it.

Dan says the owls look like Toteros, lol

The diapers arrived this week. They are definitely different than any of our other diapers. Since they’re AIOs you don’t have to stuff a pocket, which is a time-saver. They’re different from other AIOs in that the liner is attached on one side and unattached on the other, making it dry faster than an AIO where the liner is a part of the diaper. You can even increase the absorbency by snapping on another liner to the unattached end of the liner. They are very trim for a cloth diaper, and as you can see from the above picture, the patterns are super cute. :)

I have to admit, I don’t like the side snaps on the diaper, and the liner flapping around is kind of annoying to me (although maybe not as annoying as an AIO with a liner that takes forever to dry, I don’t know.) Although it’s nice to be able to adjust the absorbency, it’s just not as adjustable as a pocket diaper, which I still prefer to this. Oh, and with a baby in the 95th percentile across the board, I am a little worried about how small they are. (They claim to go to 35 lbs but I don’t know…) I do like the GroVias despite the downsides, and will happily add them to my diaper rotation (which now is more than I can count. I still do diaper laundry every three days, so it’s not like any diapers are just sitting on the shelf!)

Speaking of new diapers, I also added two more pockets from Lovely Pocket Diapers: a camo print and a fuzzy cow print:

Both classic LPDs

The cow diaper is minky, the first one I’ve purchased. It’s pretty fun. Damien hasn’t worn it yet but I’ll update (with photos!) when he does. :)

take me out to the ball game

I wrote the last post about our weekend adventure Saturday evening, so I’ll just continue from there. Well, Damien did fall asleep eventually – around 11pm I think, which is actually pretty good considering how loud that motel was. Dan and I determined that the people in the room above us jumped everywhere they went. (In reality I think the hallway/balcony was just really rattle-y, so it wouldn’t have mattered which floor we were on. We’ll be looking at different motels next time.)

Sitting up in a real Boppy - the faux Boppy is too thin and floppy for sitting

Damien slept okay in the Pack n Play, but he woke up several times during the night while usually he only wakes up once. He fell asleep after he ate around 8am, so I let him (and Dan) sleep a little longer when I went across the street to Peet’s Coffee & Tea (oh Peet’s, how I have missed you! Sadly then don’t have them in my town.) When I got back we got ready, packed up, checked out of the hotel, and were on the road by 10am. We drove to my favorite BART station (well, the one I always park at anyway, except for the year we lived walking distance from BART), repacked the car so nothing valuable was visible, put Damien in the front pack, and bought our tickets, and had to wait less than five minutes before our train arrived.

The carrier is pretty close to Giants colors... :)

Damien did great in the front pack on the train. He got a little bored when we were sitting down, but after the first train there weren’t seats available and he liked that much better, lol. (I was impressed that four people offered me their seat, but I declined because honestly that’s what the baby wanted! I took someone up on it on the trip home, though.) After riding two BART trains we switched to Muni, which dropped us off right in front of AT&T Park.

In the plaza in front of the ballpark

We had just under two hours before the game, so we walked around a bit before taking the escalator to our seats at club level. Although the cheaper seats in View Reserve level give a better view of the ballpark and bay, club level is fun because it has indoor semi-private food stands and tables to eat at, plus a ton of Giants memorabilia in display cases. They even had the 2010 World Series trophy on display, which I hadn’t seen yet (Dan and his mom saw it ‘on tour’ but I had to work) so Damien and I took a picture with it.

Okay, so it's not a GOOD picture, but it's still a picture. Also, I promise this is the last pic of Damien/me/the carrier.

Dan and I were hungry, so he partook of the traditional garlic fries, while I tried a (huge) slice of wood-fired margherita pizza (with an extra large Diet Coke in a souvenir cup, which is my park tradition.) Everything was delicious, but that tends to be the case at AT&T park. It’s definitely not typical sporting event food. (As for Damien, he nursed once during the game and once after the game was over, though the loud noises kept distracting him.) I found a gift cart and bought a program (for me) and a ‘Pandoval’ plushie (for Damien, which he played with during the game.)

Damien grabbed the sleeve of the guy next to him at one point, lol

I was super impressed with our seats. Even though they didn’t afford the best view (they were literally out in left field) it was good enough; we could see the whole diamond unobstructed, and only twice was the action obscured (once was a fly ball caught by the Giants, the other was a home run by Sandoval.) What was awesome, though, was that we were in the shade the entire time (under an overhanging roof), and that my seat was in a corner and had extra space to one side of it. There were at least four babies in our general section, so I guess I wasn’t the only one who thought it was perfect for little folks.

Napping by the top of the fourth inning

Oh, and the game itself was a good one! The Giants beat the Padres (the other MLB team I’ve seen a lot, since we used to live near San Diego) with a score of 4 to 1. Madison Bumgarner did a great job pitching, and it was fun to see Buster Posey on first base. I loved all the action on the bases, which is exactly what we need this year (as if I’m a Giant, lol.)

An usher took this for us - the uncropped version features her finger, lol. Sadly, my sunglasses tumbled over the railing right after this picture...

After the game we relaxed a little while, hoping the trains wouldn’t be quite so crowded. No such luck – I was practically falling over the entire Muni ride, with no available convenient handholds, and BART was only a little better. We got on the same train as Dan’s mom and her friend, which was pretty funny because we weren’t planning to meet up with them until Fairfield. We rode from Oakland to El Cerrito together, and then met up again at Fresh Choice down the road (though not before our car had to take an emergency stop to calm a baby meltdown. I don’t know if he was hot, hungry, or just tired of the car, but I’ve never heard him cry that hard.)

I didn't take any pics of the ride home, so here's Damien in his silly hat and giant bib (which he soaked completely with drool by the end of the game)

Damien was in better spirits after dinner and even took a nap for awhile, but I was already rethinking the next trip (we’re supposed to go to another game May 20.) Once he woke up we stopped to gas up the car and feed him, but fifteen minutes down the road he was in full meltdown mode again. This time nothing I did placated him, and we ended up sitting in our car in the dark in a field in the middle of nowhere, listening to him cry. We finally decided to just go, and I sang lullabies in his ear until he finally gave up and fell asleep (and proceeded to stay asleep through being carried into the house and transferred to his crib, which was nice.)

Exhibit A: Drool (also, his adorable Buster Posey jersey!)

After that ride home I was REALLY second-guessing going back to the city anytime soon. It’s just such a long day for Damien. Of course I really want to go back, and we’ve been planning two additional games for awhile now (the May 20 one and another one in June) so we’ll have to see. Damien is better in the car than he was a month ago (then, he would have been melting down the first fifteen minutes in the car!) Also, he might find his convertible carseat more comfortable than the infant seat – it certainly looks like it would be to me. I do know that I’ll have to insist on driving ourselves if we do go back, because I want the opportunity to stop wherever we need to (even in a creepy field if need be.)

…Well, at least Damien’s first baseball game was memorable! He attended several Giants games in utero (once before I knew I was pregnant!) …and if he ever gets used to the car, he’ll go to many, many more. :)
